CIV5 Appreciation Society

Post by martbhell on Wed Oct 21, 2015 7:33 pm

Figured I'll start another thread to get this ball rolling!

I suck at CIV5 but like it Smile

Has anybody else played it multiplayer or so to have some suggestions?
I once played it like one of us created a new game and didn't do anything besides saving, then distributed the save file and then we checked who did best Smile
Especially with very different time zones maybe that is the best?
If we play a game in real-time MP then how long does a game take?

A normal full game on quick is usually a few hours (more or less depending on population). I play it a lot, but I do not consider myself super good, I just think I am "good." Smile

1st trick : manage your relations with city states, especially the cultural based ones. They provide you with culture which make you getting social policies at a faster rate. Also, the military city state will provide you with military units, so try to get at least one of them under your thumb.

2nd trick : don't create too much cities (3 or 4), since it keeps the culture needed to earn new social policies to a relatively low level. Instead of taking full control of your enemies cities when you conquer them, turn them into puppet city. They will provide you with a lot of money since their default setting is to concentrate on taxes.

3rd trick : production is the key to victory. Since you need to produce a lot of buildings and a few military units, you should build as much mines as you could. When you have discovered chemistry, their production will grow a bit more. Don't cut down forest since you can turn them into lumber yard. Around industrial era you will make it worth your while.

4th trick : You need to build as much wonders as you could. They will make your score jump but also provide you with interesting bonuses. You should concentrate on those who provide engineering specialists, this way you will get engineers and will be able to construct wonders in one turn. Manage your adversaries technology level by knowing when they changed era, You can also know how many technologies they got in advance or different from yours by sending trade caravans/ships. It will translate itself in tech points you get each turn. In knowing that you will not pursue the same wonders they do, unless you have an engineer at hand.

5th trick : This one concerns social policies. Go with the Liberty based ones first, try to get a settler as fast as you can, afterwards go with worker and so on. Then concentrate on the right branch of the Honor ones. You might also want to go with the Patronage, but only the first one at this point. If you have some to spare in the medieval era, you could go in Culture. As soon as you get in the renaissance era, turn your interest to Rationalism, the 3 first ones will provide you with bonuses in science and scientists production which is great since you need a lot more tech points at this stage to gain a new science. Since you should had conquered a few cities at this point and a lot of trading post this will greatly boost your knowledge. Afterwards go with those provided by Ideology.

Religion is not my big thing but you should try to be the first to form one. By doing so you will be able to build cathedrals. The focus on cathedrals is based on the fact that you can't use your specialists for a while unless you have those in your cities. Concerning the pantheons you should go with what you got around in terms of ressources. I usually go with god of the open sky, earth mother or oral tradition. If for some reason you have a lot of desert tiles surrounding your cities you should go with desert folklore.

Concerning your how long question, it depends on how big is your map and how many players. To keep it to a minimum you can set a time limit at setup, if you do so it will cut down the wait caused by someone who is afk. On average (with normal difficulty and default size) a game should take around 12 hours if your adversaries are somewhat familiar with the game's concepts.

There's a GPA group in steam, are you in there? I'm in there but I'm back from NYC tomorrow so no steam until then.
