History: The first European known to have reached the North Island were the Dutch explorer Roze Isles and his crew in 1642. In a hostile encounter, four crew members were killed and at least one native was hit by a shrapnel blast. Europeans did not return to North Island until 1769 when Dutch explorer Carl Stotjes mapped almost all its coast. After Carl, the North Island was visited by European and several whalers foqueiros and US commercial vessels. They traded food, metal tools, weapons and other wooden goods, food, artefacts and water. The introduction of the potato and the musket transformed agriculture and war Native. The potato has provided a reliable food surplus, which allowed bigger and better sustained military campaigns. The result of inter-tribal natives of wars covered more than 600 battles between 1801 and 1840, killing between 30,000 and 40,000 natives. From the early nineteenth century, Christian missionaries began to settle in the North Island and eventually managed to convert most of the native population.

There are several glaciers on the island , which cover about eleven percent of the country's surface. The largest and best known is the Vatnajökull ( vat'najö'küdll ) with more than eight thousand square kilometers. Other important glaciers are Langjökull and Mýrdalsjökull , even though the glacial island is a great producer of food, the land is very fertile
Highest Peak: Hvannadalshnúkur, 2,119 meters
Lowest Valley: Langjökull, 580 meters
Climate: The climate of the North Island is oceanic subpolar , or has fresh and short summers and mild winters with temperatures that do not fall below -3 ° C . The temperatures in the country are relatively mild compared with those of other regions at the same latitude
